Brief to the Government of Manitoba - Department of Family Services and Consumer Affairs
Social Services and Child Care in Manitoba
CUPE has started an initiative to support our members working in various social service agencies. Over the last six months, there have been a number of events for CUPE members, their employers and community representatives to meet to discuss common issues.

For example, Zully Trujillo (right), on behalf of Local 2153, recently presented a cheque for $500 to Catherine Wirt, Manitoba representative for the Canada Without Poverty campaign. Catherine is also the Referral Coordinator for Winnipeg Harvest. The Local decided to support the campaign that is raising awareness about poverty in Canada and lobbying the federal government to seriously reduce poverty. Here is what Rose Streick, President of CUPE Local 1550, says about the RESPECT Campaign and the CUPE members she works with.

The main objective of the CUPE RESPECT Campaign is to help increase public support and funding for social service and child care agencies in Manitoba, so that workers in these important public services can receive the wages, pensions and benefits they are due. This Government has demonstrated its commitment to poverty reduction with the ‘All Aboard’ initiative where special efforts and public consultations have been made in an effort to reduce poverty and increase social inclusion in our province. In response to the request for input CUPE would like to draw special attention to the workers in the social services and child care sectors. These workers, who are primarily women, care for the vulnerable in our society and reach out to support those that are excluded.
CUPE members and staff from the Social Services and Child Care Sector participated in the LEAF (Legal Education and Action Fund) Manitoba’s 25th Anniversary Annual Person’s Day breakfast held on October 15th.
Oyate Tipi Cumini Yape's 6th annual "fresh start" furniture drive got a boost from some members of CUPE Local 2343 on May 29, 2010.
When CUPE Social Services and Child Care members launched their RESPECT Campaign several months ago, one of their goals was to build community. For this reason, the Campaign was one of the sponsors for Pride Week in Winnipeg.
From April 25th to May 1st many centres across Manitoba celebrated Early Childhood Educators' Week.
